A better life for children and young people placed in care

Children and young people placed in care should thrive and have the same educational opportunities as others. We work to ensure that children and young people placed in care get successfully through school and education and thrive both in and outside school.

In Scandinavia, around 38,000 children are placed in care*. Many have had a really tough start in life, which, among other things, affect their well-being and ability to learn and develop.

Children and young people who are placed in care often have unstable school attendance with high absenteeism and many school changes. Accordingly, only about one in two young people placed in care completes the 9th grade with a diploma.

We support organisations and initiatives that work to ensure that:

  • Children and young people placed in care get the necessary support for learning and life skills – both where they are placed and at school.

  • Children and young people placed in care feel part of a community and have strong relationships with both children and adults.

  • Children and young people placed in care are systematically involved in their own case, and that we as a society listen to their experiences and learn from them.
