BIG BIO sells two cinemas to Nordisk Film Cinemas

BIG BIO and Nordisk Film Cinemas have reached an agreement for the sale of BIG BIO Herlev and BIG BIO Nordhavn – two well-run and innovative cinemas featuring Dolby Atmos sound and luxury seating in all screens.

BIG BIO Herlev was founded in 2015 by Henrik and Louise Obel, followed by BIG BIO Nordhavn and BIG BIO Holstebro. Henrik and Louise are now selling the two cinemas in Herlev and Nordhavn to Nordisk Film Cinemas, while retaining and continuing to operate BIG BIO Holstebro themselves.

“We have had a constructive dialogue with Nordisk Film Cinemas, who wish to build on what we have created. When we founded BIG BIO in 2015, our mission was to give our guests the best possible cinema experience. That led to three cinemas with luxury seating in every seat and the highest-quality sound in all screens – combined with a focus on sustainability. We are proud to have set a new cinema standard together with a fantastic team and with tremendous support from our guests,” says Henrik Obel.

BIG BIO Herlev is located in Big Shopping, and BIG BIO Nordhavn is situated at Hamborg Plads. The two cinemas each have five screens with Dolby Atmos sound and a combined total of 1,154 seats, all luxury recliner chairs.

Asger Flygare Bech-Thomsen, Chairman of the Board of Nordisk Film Biografer A/S, welcomes the agreement with Henrik and Louise Obel:

“We have followed BIG BIO’s development over the years and are greatly impressed by the quality of cinema experience and guest service that Henrik and Louise Obel have created. That is also why we are pleased that they are entrusting us to carry two out of three of their cinemas forward. The cinemas in Herlev and Nordhavn are a very strong fit for Nordisk Film Cinemas,” says Asger Flygare Bech-Thomsen.

Nordisk Film operates 24 cinemas in Denmark, as well as 21 cinemas in Norway and two cinemas in Sweden. Nordisk Film Cinemas will take over the two BIG BIO cinemas on 1 October 2026.
