Kate Winslet to read Mr Gum books for kids

AudioGO, the leading audiobook publisher, has secured Kate Winslet CBE to read the popular Mr Gum children's books written by Andy Stanton. Mr Gum is published by Egmont UK's Jelly Pie with more than 1.5 million copies sold word wide.

The multi-award-winning star of feature films such as Titanic, Iris, The Reader and HBO's Mildred Pierce also loves to read children's stories, especially those which indulge her fondness for practical jokes and iconoclastic characters.

Miss Winslet has initially recorded four of the best loved Mr Gum tales of zany happenings, Curmudgeonly protagonists and Riotous fun which will be available from 6th September on CD and download formats. Further recordings are planned in the future so youngsters will not be deprived once they are hooked.

The four titles are:

  • You're a Bad Man, Mr Gum!
  • Mr Gum and the Biscuit Billionaire
  • In Mr Gum and the Goblins
  • Mr Gum and the Power Crystals

Author, Andy Stanton's response to the news was characteristically enthusiastic:
"When I heard that Kate Winslet wanted to record my books, I couldn't believe it. I was all like, 'Wha?! OMG! Unh?! Smurf? Nistrill!!' And now, listening to the final results, it's blown my mind all over again - they're absolutely amazing. Kate's delivery adds a whole new dimension to Mr Gum, and kids everywhere are going to fall in love with her sparkling narration and hilarious characterisations. It's a win-Winslet situation for sure."
