The Egmont Foundation’s new philanthropic strategy focuses on safeguarding children and young people against “modern poverty” – the lack of learning and life skills. The main objective is that by 2030 all young people are able to an upper secondary education.
Today 15 percent of the children aged 15 lack the reading and math skills necessary to do well in work life or complete an upper secondary education. The Egmont Foundation now focuses its philanthropic strategy on supporting these children at risk.
”When supporting children and young people at risk we want to contribute in creating positive changes. The new strategy will enable us to act earlier and more holistic,” says Henriette Christiansen, director, Egmont Foundation's Aid and Grants Administration.
The main objective of The Egmont Foundation is that by 2030 all young people must be able to complete an upper secondary education. In practice this means that all children and young people must master reading, math and writing when they leave school. And they must have the social and personal skills necessary to do well in life.
The Egmont Foundation works to safeguard children and young people against “modern poverty” – the lack of learning and life skills. Children and young people at risk are often affected by three problems, that are often interlinked. They often have learning difficulties and their learning needs are often not adequately addressed. They often have low self-esteem and are often met with low expectations. They often come from homes with inadequate parenting skills.
The Egmont Foundation places the child at the center and creates change for and with the individual child. Children have important knowledge and can contribute both in relation to their own development and to developments in society in general.
The Egmont Foundation is a commercial foundation. It consists of a commercial entity, which operates the media business and is responsible for Nordisk Film, TV2 Norge and more than 700 weekly and monthly magazine titles, and a charitable entity which works to improve the learning and life skills of children and young people at risk. Every year approx. DKK 100m of the profits from the Egmont Foundation’s media activities is donated to philanthropic activities in Denmark and Norway. Since 1920, the Foundation has distributed about DKK 2.8bn to support the people most at risk in society.
