Magazines matter

Story House Egmont has a wide range of magazines, offering a local alternative to the major tech companies. Equal media subsidiaries will allow magazines to be on an equal footing with other journalistic media, such as newspapers.

Strong stories

Two years ago, Danish politicians approved a support scheme for journalistic magazines. The support enables Story House to develop content for the benefit of a wide range of target groups and act as a counterweight to the tech giants. Subsidiaries in Denmark is a step towards Story House Egmont's magazines being on an equal footing with other journalistic media, such as newspapers which has received massive public funding for years.

“For over 100 years, Story House Egmont has published magazines that reflect the core cultural values of society. As a media company, we offer a local alternative to the major tech companies. We are pleased with the public funding as it recognises the important role that our magazines play in the world of journalism. It is the first step towards ending distortion of competition,” says Frank Vilstrup, Director of Consumer Magazines.

The Danish weekly Hjemmet is Egmont’s oldest magazine and has produced relevant and important journalism for more than a century. Every week, they deliver journalism that readers can use in many aspects of their lives.

“When we talk about the journalism in Hjemmet, I would say, that we should be somewhat better than everyone else. Because our readers don’t read much else. I still meet someone thinking Hjemmet is not a particularly prestigious magazine. But I think we are someone who can reach people who do not get news from elsewhere. If it wasn’t for us, they wouldn’t know much about what is going on in society,” Editor-in-Chief Marianne Gram states.

Although the current level of public funding for magazines remains extremely low compared to that for newspapers, political work is underway in Denmark to develop a new model for future media support. And Story House Egmont actively works to secure future subsidiaries for its Danish titles, Euroman, ALT for damerne, Eurowoman, Hjemmet, HER&NU, Alt.dk, Boligliv, RUM, Hendes Verden and Gastro.

Continued subsidiaries will mean that Story House Egmont can continue to inspire, inform and entertain in print – for the benefit of many and as an important counterweight to the international tech giants and fake news.
