Art is the new black in high school
18 january, 2010In a ceremony at the National Gallery of Denmark Lindhardt og Ringhof Uddannelse launched its high school text book on contemporary art "For Øjeblikket" [Right Now]. The book has been given financial support from the Egmont Foundation.
The Egmont Foundation has previously run the project "Contemporary Art and Young People", which made it clear that there was a strong need for a text book about contemporary art for young people. By joining forces with Lindhardt og Ringhof Uddannelse an intelligent text book on contemporary art has been produced.
"The evaluations from the project showed that young people are keen to discuss contemporary art with the artists themselves, and many others, and that they get an understanding of the fact that art can accommodate many problem areas beyond the purely visual," says Grethe Nymark, who is project coordinator in The Egmont Foundation. Against this background, it was natural to produce a thoroughly produced piece of educational material about contemporary art.
"The book gives a straightforward approach to contemporary works and makes contemporary art accessible. The book's DVD also makes it natural for my students to connect theory and practice," explains teacher Lotte Surh, who missed proper educational materials in a subject area that does not belong among the most dominant in high school.
"Half of the first edition is already sold. We are pleased that The Egmont Foundation has been able to help with 500.000 kroner in order to lower the selling price," says Frants Toft, who is editorial director of Lindhardt og Ringhof Uddannelse.
