A Timeless Teen Drama
”Zappa” takes place in the Copenhagen suburb of Brønshøj in 1961. Bjørn (Adam Tønsberg), the protagonist, is torn between his two class mates Mulle (Morten Hoff) and Steen (Peter Reichardt). Most of all, Bjørn would like to just play soccer with the childish working class boy, Mulle, but he also looks up to the more mature Steen, who comes from a wealthy family. Steen tricks the two other boys into doing some petty crime, but when neither Bjørn nor Mulle can say no, events take a much more serious turn than expected, which makes it even harder for them to get out.
”Zappa” is a true classic in Danish movies. Like the more recent Swedish movie, “Evil (Onskan)”, it is a riveting and grim tale of how teens interact and bully each other, and it shows what director Bille August himself calls "fascism on a micro level".
