Opening of the year in Scandinavia

“The Da Vinci Code”, which is distributed by Nordisk Film, has conquered the cinemas. During the opening weekend, hordes of people came in to experience Dan Brown’s bestseller brought to life.

Finland reports 59,764 tickets sold, and in Norway, the number is 114,092 – which is the 7th best result ever. In Sweden the movie was seen by 123,285 visitors in 129 cinemas. This makes the Da Vinci Code the most successful opening for Sony Pictures in Sweden. In Denmark, a whopping 144,749 people saw the film, and that brings “The Da Vinci Code” to a #4 on the list of the all-time best Danish opening weekends ever – only to be topped by Harry Potter 4 (2005), Harry Potter 2 (2002) and Lord of the Rings 3 (2003).

“The Da Vinci Code” cannot be characterized as a cult movie with a following by dedicated fans, who want to see the movie right away. The Da Vinci Code primarily targets an adult, book-reading audience, who isn’t normally in the cinemas from day one. The impressive numbers suggest that also a lot of the young people, who usually belongs to the heavy-user group in cinemas, want to experience the “Da Vinci phenomenon” by themselves.

"With an opening this great, there is a good possibility that the movie reaches around a half a million tickets sold in Denmark, which actually corresponds with the sales figures for the book itself,” says Jan Lehmann, Sales Director in Nordisk Film Theatrical Distribution.

Katarina Nyman, Senior Marketing Manager at Nordisk Film in Finland, adds: ”Da Vinci Code's take was 77,4 % of the total business during the weekend. These results are extremely good considering that we won the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday (Finnish monster-winners attracted 1.7 Mill. TV-viewers), plus Finland played in the ice hockey world cup finals on Sunday. We are expecting extremely strong results for “The Da Vinci Code’s” first week in cinemas.”
