”Kundskabens Træ” back in the cinema

On occasion of our 100-year anniversary, Nordisk Film has found the 100 most popular movies of all time and put them up for a vote by the Danish population. Now, Director Nils Malmros’s movie “Kundskabens Træ” (Tree of Knowledge) from 1981 has been voted back in the cinemas in its own 25th anniversary year. The movie is screened in all Danish Nordisk Film Cinemas on Sunday, June 2.

“Kundskabens Træ” is set in the Danish city of Aarhus at the end of the 1950’ies. It follows a class of 17 school mates through the last three years of school. What makes the movie so durable long term – this year is its 25th anniversary – is its timeless depiction of teen-life’s weird change from children’s logic to adult thinking, and the conflicts that occur, because the youngsters grow up at different rates.

The movie’s protagonists are remembered by most Danes, who saw the movie in the 1980’ies, and some of the movie’s lines have become Danish slang.
